Community leader Ly Mai Chan, talks about how people in her
"Our main crops are rice and corn. We keep animals - pigs and chickens, ducks, dogs and cats." Foreign guests are not fed the latter unless they especially request it! "We use buffalo to help the men to plough the fields with rice and corn. For planting and harvesting men and women work together."
Ly Mai Chan's sister reports that her family lost two buffalo to the cold last winter, which means the women and men have to work harder in the fields.
The terrace fields are irrigated with water brought down from the surrounding hills and mountains. There is one crop annually for both the rice and corn. Planting can sometimes depend on rainfall. This year the rice was planted in May as there was lots of rain.
Ly Mai Chan explains how the village supplements its' meager income through tourism, "We try to make money from our handicrafts and by giving hospitality as part of our homestays. I think guests really like our special herbal baths."
