Ta Phin Food and Drink

The Red Dao people usually have 2 main meals a day, breakfast and dinner, with just a light meal at lunch time. Normally, Red Dao meals are very simple. In the past, they primarily ate soup and rice; with only the wealthier families having meat. Nowadays, their living standards have significantly improved and their meals include a greater variety of foods.

Red Dao people are very hospitable; a common Dao saying is: “When you come to a Dao village, you will never have to worry about being hungry.” Whoever you are and wherever you are from, when you visit a Dao’s family at mealtime, you will always be welcomed and well fed.

During festivals; Lunar New Year, wedding ceremonies or funerals, the Dao usually kill chickens and pigs and invite their relatives and neighbors to come and share with them. There are many festivals every year, such as: Ram Thang Gieng on the 15th of January on the lunar calendar (a day to celebrate their ancestor’s lives); Ram Thang Bay on the 15th of July on the lunar calendar; and, Le Mung Lua Moi, celebrated many times each year (in order to inform their ancestors about the crops). These festivals are a time for the community to gather.
